Spring Presentation 2

On April 13, 2016, the team presented on the progress made in the project. We have flatten some copper wires and bent all of the PVC pipes for the curves. We found that there is a problem with our show collector. We had it designed to stay static, we found that we need our shoe collector to be dynamic as the boggie follows the track along the turns and inclines/declines.

Spring Presentation 1

On Wednesday, March 9, 2016, our team presented on our final design for the quarter scale Spartan Superway. We were originally focusing our efforts on the 1/12th scale in the fall, now we will be scaling up the design. We have begun experimenting with ways to bend PVC pipes for the enclosure of the wayside rail. In the presentation that can be viewed in the link below, we show what we have done so far, our current schedule, our predicted costs, about $530, and a few dependable or exposures that we may encounter.

Presentation 3 Fall 2015

Below is the link for presentation 3, where we discuss the project, prime design, functionality, fabrication, testing plans, cost analysis, and the schedule and plans for next semester.

We approximated that we would need to spend about $451.00 for materials and fabrication for the wayside rail for the small scale. It may be slightly more, because we plan to 3-D print some components, and may have to look into outside sources because of the time it takes to 3-D print parts.

Satus Update

This week our team is working on our final designs for the 1/12 scale wayside rail collector shoes. We have decided that the shoes will be on the sides of the boogie instead of on the top. This is due to the fact that there is not a lot of room on top of the boogies. We are working on CAD drawings for the new design and will have them done by next week. We have talked with the Electrical Engineering group and have have discussed the wayside rails. We are going to need to have about 20 amps running through these rails. In order to allow for this amount of current we will use 12 gauge AWG wire for the wayside rail. With this wire and our new collector shoes we are ready for our final design and prototyping.

The wayside power team will design a working model for the 1/12 and ¼ scale and will collaborate with the solar and bogie teams to determine the best method of powering our bogies with solar.

Design Requirements
  • Hot rail on 1/12 and ¼ scale models to be kid safe for Maker Faire
  • Power supply and circuitry to power 10 bogies on the 1/12 scale and 2 bogies on the ¼ scale
  • Aesthetically pleasing and durable implementation of wayside power
  • Stationary source

Deliverables
  • Working model for wayside power on 1/12 and ¼ scale

Things to Accomplish (Action Items)
  • Determine power requirements of bogies on 1/12 and ¼ scale
  • Determine safe limits for working with electric circuits around children
  • Find a way to power bogie and charge battery from wayside
  • Discuss several design solutions for wayside power and create a plan for narrowing down to a final design choice
  • Work closely with the solar team and the track design team.
